Tap and toilet repairs in Sheffield

Most dripping taps and running toilets in Sheffield are fixed with a small part: a washer or cartridge for the tap, a fill valve or flush valve seal for the toilet. It is worth fixing quickly, because a constantly running toilet wastes a lot of water, and on a meter you pay for every litre.

You need this when

  • A tap that drips after you turn it off

  • Water trickling into the toilet pan all the time

  • A cistern that hisses or takes ages to refill

  • A flush button that sticks or needs pressing twice

  • Water on the floor around the toilet base

  • An outside tap that leaks or has frozen

What happens, step by step

The visit in order, so you know what to expect before anyone arrives.

  1. 1

    Identify the fitting

We check the make and type of tap or cistern so the right part goes in first time.

  2. 2

    Isolate and repair

We turn the water off at the isolating valve, swap the washer, cartridge, fill valve or seal, and check the pipework around it.

  3. 3

    Replace if better value

If a tap or cistern is worn out or parts are no longer made, we explain the cost of repair against a new one.

  4. 4

    Test

We run the tap or flush several times to make sure it shuts off cleanly and nothing weeps.

Why taps drip

Older taps with crosshead or capstan handles use a rubber washer that wears and stops sealing. Newer quarter turn and mixer taps use a ceramic cartridge that can crack or get grit in it.

In the softer water areas of west Sheffield, scale is rarely the cause. Yorkshire Water's 2025 report puts the Ringinglow zone, which covers Dore, Totley, Fulwood and Millhouses, at just 9.3 mg/l calcium. On the east side it is different. In Handsworth and Woodhouse the water is moderately hard, and in central Rotherham it is hard. There, limescale builds on cartridges and spouts and makes taps stiff.

Why toilets keep running

A toilet that keeps running is usually one of two things. The fill valve is not shutting off, so water rises until it spills down the overflow into the pan. Or the flush valve seal at the bottom of the cistern is worn, so water seeps past it into the pan.

You can test which one it is. Lift the lid and look at the water level. If it is up at the overflow pipe, it is the fill valve. If it is below the overflow and the pan is still trickling, it is the flush valve seal.

Both are standard repairs. Old cisterns in Victorian and Edwardian houses sometimes use parts that are no longer made, and a new fill and flush valve set is often the better fix.

Landlords and student lets

Student houses near the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam put a lot of wear on taps, flushes and shower mixers. Small leaks get missed until they become damp patches or high bills.

If you let a house in multiple occupation in Sheffield, the council's HMO licence application asks for gas and electrical certificates, and licence conditions cover the condition of the property. Keeping taps, toilets and showers working is part of a landlord's repair duty. A once a year check of every tap, flush and seal between tenancies is a cheap way to avoid bigger repairs.

Outside taps and winter

An outside tap is one of the first things to freeze in a Sheffield winter. If water is left in the pipe running through the wall, it can split inside the house where you cannot see it.

A good outside tap has two things. A double check valve stops dirty water being drawn back into your drinking supply, which the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require. An isolating valve inside lets you turn the tap off and drain it before the first frost. If your outside tap has neither, it is worth having them added.

We can fit a new outside tap at the front or back of the house, or move an old one that sits on a north facing wall. In terraces, the back yard is usually the easiest spot, close to the kitchen pipework.

What affects the price

Small repairs depend on the part and how easy the fitting is to reach. Boxed in cisterns and concealed frames take longer. We confirm the price after a look, and we can often do several small jobs in one visit.

Taps and toilets: what people ask.

Can I fix a dripping tap myself?

Many people can, if they can turn off the water at an isolating valve and know the tap type. If the tap is old or seized, it is easy to damage it.

How do I stop my toilet running for now?

Turn the isolating valve on the pipe into the cistern a quarter turn with a flat screwdriver. You can still flush by refilling the cistern with a bucket.

Is a running toilet expensive?

It can be if you are on a water meter, because the water runs all day and night. Fix it soon.

Do you fit outside taps?

Yes. An outside tap needs a double check valve to protect the drinking water supply, and an isolating valve inside so it can be drained before winter.
