Plumber in Nether Edge, Sheffield

Nether Edge is one of Sheffield's biggest conservation areas, full of large Victorian villas and terraces with cellars, tall rooms and old heating systems. Common jobs are cold radiators, leaking pipes in cellars, blocked shared drains and bathroom refits that have to work around original features. The water is soft, so wear matters more than scale.

Homes in Nether Edge

Nether Edge is on high ground between the Porter Brook and the Sheaf valley. Its conservation area is the largest on Sheffield City Council's list, at about 154 hectares. Housing is mostly large Victorian and Edwardian villas, semis and terraces, built of stone or brick, with big bay windows and cellars. Brincliffe has some of the largest villas. Sharrow, closer to town, has denser terraces. Many villas are now flats. Heating systems are often long, extended and mixed.

Heating in tall Victorian houses

A Nether Edge villa can have three floors, a cellar and high ceilings. The heating system has to push water a long way and up a long way. Air collects at the top, so top floor radiators are often the first to go cold at the top. Sludge collects at the bottom, so ground floor radiators go cold at the bottom.

Bleeding radiators, balancing the system and cleaning out sludge usually help. If the system is still a mix of old cast iron radiators and modern panels, it may need a careful look at pipe sizes and pump settings. A new boiler on an old dirty system will not last as long as it should, so a clean and a magnetic filter are worth doing at the same time. Our post on cold radiators goes through the checks.

Cellars, drains and soft water

Most homes here have cellars, and that is where the supply pipe, stop tap and often the meter are. Leaks from old joints there can go unnoticed, and so can damp coming in from the ground. If water appears after rain and your meter is still, it is likely ground water. If the meter moves with every tap off, it is a leak.

Behind many terraces, drains from several houses join before reaching the sewer. A shared drain like that has been Yorkshire Water's responsibility since October 2011. If next door is blocked too, report it to them.

The water is soft. Yorkshire Water's 2025 report puts the Sharrow supply zone, which covers the Nether Edge and Sharrow postcodes we checked, at 15.4 mg/l calcium. Old lead supply pipes are still found in some houses, and Yorkshire Water offers a free water test if you are worried.

Bathrooms in period houses

Refitting a bathroom in a Nether Edge villa often means working around original features: high ceilings, sash windows, cornicing and thick walls. Old cast iron waste pipes may need replacing as part of the job. A roll top bath on a suspended timber floor needs the joists checked, because a full bath with someone in it is heavy.

If the house is split into flats, think about the flat below. A leak from a shower tray seal or a badly sealed waste can come through a decorated ceiling. A good tray, a proper waste trap and a tested seal are worth the extra care.

Local questions.

Why are my top floor radiators cold?

Usually air at the high points of a tall system. Bleed them with the heating off, then check the boiler pressure.

Is Nether Edge water soft?

Yes. Yorkshire Water's 2025 report puts the Sharrow zone at 15.4 mg/l calcium.

Can I change the bathroom in a conservation area house?

Inside work like a new bathroom normally does not need planning permission. Changes to the outside, such as a new flue on the front, may need advice.
