Burst pipe repair in Sheffield

If a pipe has burst in your Sheffield home, turn off the stop tap straight away, switch off the boiler and any electrics near the water, and open the cold taps to drain the system. Most bursts in Sheffield happen when frozen pipes thaw, so check lofts, cellars and outside walls after a cold spell.

Right now

What is happening right now?

You need this when

  • Water spraying or pouring from a pipe

  • A bulge or split in a pipe after a freeze

  • Water coming through a ceiling below a loft tank

  • No water from the taps on a freezing morning

  • A sudden drop in boiler pressure with water showing somewhere

What happens, step by step

The visit in order, so you know what to expect before anyone arrives.

  1. 1

    Isolate the water

We help you shut the stop tap and drain down if you have not already.

  2. 2

    Cut out the damage

The split section is cut out and replaced with new copper or plastic pipe, depending on what is there.

  3. 3

    Check for more splits

Ice often splits a pipe in more than one place, so we check the rest of the run before turning the water back on.

  4. 4

    Protect it

Exposed pipes in lofts, cellars and garages are lagged, and we explain if a pipe should be moved away from a cold wall.

Why Sheffield pipes burst

Water expands as it freezes. The ice itself rarely splits the pipe where it forms. The pressure builds between the ice and a closed tap, and the pipe gives way there. That is why the leak often shows only when the weather warms up.

Sheffield has more cold weather than its city status suggests. The city rises from 29 metres at Blackburn Meadows to 548 metres at High Stones on the Derbyshire border, and the Geography of Sheffield notes that Deepcar and Stocksbridge are often among the first places to get snow. Homes on the western edges, in Fulwood, Lodge Moor and Dore, also sit high and exposed.

The pipes most at risk are in unheated spaces: loft tanks and pipes, cellars with a grate open to the street, outside taps, and pipes on north facing walls.

Your pipe or Yorkshire Water's?

If the burst is inside your house or on the pipe between your boundary and your house, it is yours to fix. If water is coming up through the pavement or road, it is probably a Yorkshire Water main or communication pipe. Report that to Yorkshire Water rather than calling a plumber.

Some Sheffield terraces share one supply pipe between several houses. If the burst is on a shared section, the owners share the repair, as Yorkshire Water explains on its supply pipe leaks page.

Stopping it happening again

Most bursts can be prevented. Lag pipes and tanks in lofts, cellars and garages with proper foam lagging. Fit an isolating valve and drain the outside tap before winter. If you go away in a cold spell, leave the heating on low rather than off.

Yorkshire Water's winter advice also suggests checking pipes, taps, cisterns, tanks and meters in unheated areas. In stone terraces with cellars, the cold usually comes in through the cellar grate or a gap around the supply pipe. Blocking the draught is often as useful as the lagging.

Plastic or copper for the repair?

Most repairs use the same material as the pipe that burst, so joints are simple and strong. Push fit plastic pipe is flexible and copes better with freezing than copper, which makes it a good choice in a cold loft or cellar. Copper is still the right choice near the boiler and where pipes are on show.

If your house still has lead pipes, a burst is a good moment to think about replacing that run. Yorkshire Water says homes built before 1970 may have lead pipes, and it runs a lead renewal scheme for the part in the street once you replace your side. We can explain what that involves and how the application works before you decide.

One more thing to check after a lead or galvanised pipe is replaced with plastic: older homes were sometimes earthed through the metal water pipe. Yorkshire Water advises getting an electrician to check the earthing if your home was built before 1966.

What affects the price

The price depends on where the burst is, how much pipe needs replacing, whether ceilings or floors need opening and whether there is more than one split. We confirm the price before the repair.

Burst pipes: what people ask.

What should I do first if a pipe bursts?

Turn off the stop tap, turn off the boiler and immersion heater, switch off electrics near the water if safe, and open cold taps to drain the pipes.

My pipes are frozen but not burst. What do I do?

Turn off the stop tap, then warm the pipe slowly with a hot water bottle or hairdryer, starting at the tap end. Never use a naked flame.

Is a burst pipe covered by insurance?

Escape of water is often covered, but check your policy. Take photos before cleaning up and keep the repair invoice.

Water is coming up through the pavement. Who do I call?

That is usually a Yorkshire Water pipe. Report it to Yorkshire Water.
