New boiler installation in Sheffield

The right new boiler for a Sheffield home depends on how many bathrooms you have, your mains water flow and where the boiler can go. A combi suits most smaller homes with good flow. A system or regular boiler with a cylinder suits bigger houses. The installer must be Gas Safe registered and register the boiler with building control.

Combi, system or regular?

A combi boiler heats water as you use it, with no tank or cylinder. It suits flats, terraces and semis with one bathroom, as long as the mains flow is good. On some high streets in Crookes or Walkley, flow can be weaker than you would expect, and a combi will only give a strong shower if enough water comes in.

A system boiler heats a cylinder of stored hot water, usually an unvented one fed from the mains. It suits homes with two bathrooms or more.

A regular or heat only boiler works with a cold tank in the loft and a vented cylinder. It suits older systems where you want to keep the layout, which is common in big Victorian houses in Nether Edge and Broomhill. We go through the choice with you in our post on combi or system boilers.

Rules for new boilers in England

Fitting a gas boiler is notifiable building work. A Gas Safe registered installer can self certify it, and you should then receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate. Keep it, because you will need it when you sell the house.

New gas boilers in England must be condensing models. They must also have time and temperature controls, and a combi must come with at least one extra energy saving measure, such as weather compensation or a smart thermostat with automation. Your installer should explain which one they are fitting.

Sheffield details that change the job

Condensate pipes run outside need to be sized and routed to stop them freezing. That matters on the high western side of the city, where winters are colder.

Water hardness changes what we fit with the boiler. In east Sheffield and Rotherham, where Yorkshire Water reports moderately hard to hard water, a scale reducer on the cold feed to a combi is worth considering. In west Sheffield, where the water is soft, it is not usually needed.

Old back boilers behind gas fires were common in older homes. Removing one means capping the gas, sorting the chimney and moving the boiler to a new spot with a flue, which we plan at the survey.

How the quote works

The quote form on this page asks a few questions about your home and your current boiler, such as how many bathrooms you have, where the boiler is and what fuel it uses. That lets us prepare for the survey.

There are no prices on this page because every house is different. A terrace in Walkley with the boiler in the cellar is a different job to a semi in Dronfield with the boiler in the kitchen. We would rather give you a real, written quote after a survey than a number that changes on the day.

At the survey we also check the radiators and pipework. A new boiler on a sludged up system will not last as long as it should, so cleaning the system and fitting a magnetic filter is usually part of the job. If your home has very old microbore pipe or radiators that do not heat properly, we tell you before you commit, not after.

What affects the price

A new boiler price depends on the boiler type and output, whether it stays in the same place, flue and condensate routes, gas pipe size, the condition of the radiators and pipes, controls, and removing tanks or a back boiler. You get a fixed quote after the survey.

New boiler: what people ask.

Which boiler is best for a Sheffield terrace?

Most two and three bedroom terraces with one bathroom suit a combi, as long as the mains flow is good. We measure it at the survey.

Do I get a certificate for a new boiler?

Yes. A Gas Safe registered installer notifies the work and you receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate.

How long does a boiler installation take?

A straight swap is often done in a day. Changing system type or moving the boiler takes longer. We tell you at the survey.

Can you remove my back boiler?

Yes. It means capping the gas, making the fireplace safe and fitting a new boiler elsewhere with its own flue.
