Plumber in Handsworth, Sheffield

Handsworth has harder water than most of Sheffield, so limescale causes a lot of the plumbing faults here: noisy combi boilers, stiff taps, clogged shower heads and failed immersion heaters. A local plumber can fix the fault and advise on a scale reducer. Leaks and drains follow the usual Yorkshire Water rules.

Homes in Handsworth

Handsworth in east Sheffield has an older village core around the church and Handsworth Road, large areas of interwar and post war semis and council built homes, and newer estates added over recent decades. Many post war homes have solid concrete floors with heating pipes buried in them, combi boilers in the kitchen and bathrooms that have been refitted once or twice. Newer homes have plastic pipe and pressurised systems.

Harder water on the east side

Most of Sheffield's water comes off the Pennine moors and is soft. Handsworth is different. Yorkshire Water's 2025 report puts the Aughton and Woodhouse supply zone, which covers Handsworth, Woodhouse, Aston and Orgreave, at an average of 77 mg/l calcium. That is classed as moderately hard and is about eight times the figure for the Fulwood zone on the west side of the city.

Yorkshire Water does not soften water at its treatment works. Scale builds up in appliances that heat water. That shows up as:

  • A combi boiler that bangs or kettles, and hot water that runs cooler than it should.
  • An immersion heater that stops working.
  • Shower heads and tap aerators that clog.
  • Thermostatic shower valves that stick.

A scale reducer on the cold feed to a combi, descaling shower heads regularly and asking for a scale check at each boiler service all help. A water softener is an option but not a must, and Yorkshire Water says you must keep an unsoftened supply for drinking.

Leaks under solid floors

Many Handsworth semis built after the war have concrete ground floors with heating pipes laid in the screed. If your boiler keeps losing pressure and there is no visible leak, a pipe under the floor is a strong suspect. Thermal imaging while the heating runs shows where the warm water is escaping, so only a small area needs breaking out. Sometimes the better fix is to reroute the pipe along the wall rather than dig up the old one.

For leaks on the water supply, you own the pipe from your boundary to your house. Yorkshire Water owns the main and the pipe up to your boundary. If you are on a meter, a meter test with all taps off tells you quickly whether water is escaping.

Typical Handsworth jobs

Apart from scale, the jobs we expect most in Handsworth are combi boiler faults and replacements, bathroom refits in post war semis, and blocked outside drains. Toilets with low level or close coupled cisterns from earlier refits often need new fill and flush valves.

If you are replacing a combi boiler here, ask how the new one will be protected from scale. If you are fitting a new shower, choose a valve with a filter you can reach and a shower head you can take apart to descale. Small choices like that make a big difference in harder water.

Local questions.

Is Handsworth water hard?

Moderately hard. Yorkshire Water's 2025 report puts the Aughton and Woodhouse zone, covering Handsworth, at 77 mg/l calcium.

Will a scale reducer help my combi boiler?

In harder water areas like Handsworth it can slow scale build up in the hot water side of the boiler. Ask your engineer at the next service.

My boiler keeps losing pressure but I cannot see a leak. Why?

It may be a pipe under a solid floor or the pressure relief valve. A leak detection visit finds it without lifting the whole floor.
