Sheffield water hardness: is your water hard or soft?

Last updated 23 October 2026 · 5 minute read

Short answer: Most of Sheffield has soft or moderately soft water, because it comes from Pennine moorland reservoirs. Yorkshire Water's 2025 report puts the Ringinglow zone, covering Dore, Totley, Fulwood and parts of Ecclesall, at just 9.3 mg/l calcium. The east is different: Handsworth is moderately hard at 77 mg/l and central Rotherham is hard at 89.9 mg/l.

Ask anyone who has moved to Sheffield from London or the Midlands and they will tell you the kettle stays clean here. That is mostly true, but not everywhere. Water hardness in Sheffield changes a lot from one side of the city to the other, and it changes what goes wrong with boilers, cylinders, taps and showers.

What water hardness means

Hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in your water. Rain that falls on peat moorland and runs into reservoirs picks up very little of it. Water that soaks through limestone or chalk picks up a lot.

Sheffield’s main supplies come from reservoirs on the Pennine moors to the west, such as the Rivelin, Redmires, Damflask and Ewden valley reservoirs. That is why most of the city has soft water. The east of the city and Rotherham draw on different sources and get harder water.

Yorkshire Water reports hardness as milligrams of calcium per litre. Other sources, like the Drinking Water Inspectorate, use milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate. To compare them roughly, multiply the calcium figure by 2.5.

Sheffield water hardness by area

These figures come from Yorkshire Water’s postcode checker on its water hardness page, for the report period 1 January to 31 December 2025. We checked real postcodes in each area.

Zones do not follow postcodes neatly. Two streets in the same postcode district can sit in different zones, so check your own postcode.

What soft water means for your home

If you live in Crookes, Walkley, Fulwood, Ecclesall, Dore or Totley, scale is rarely the reason something breaks. Combi boilers keep their hot water flow for longer. Immersion heater elements stay clean. Shower heads and glass screens stay clearer.

The flip side is that very soft water can be a little more aggressive to metal pipes. The Drinking Water Inspectorate notes that soft water of 100 mg/l as calcium carbonate or less “will be more corrosive to pipework”. In older homes with original copper, especially in damp cellars, that can show up as small pinhole leaks over many years. We cover that in our post on pinhole leaks in copper pipes.

Soft water also lathers easily, so you need less soap and washing powder. And you almost never need a water softener on the west side of the city.

What harder water means in the east

In Handsworth, Woodhouse and Rotherham, the story is different. The Rotherham and Tinsley figure of 89.9 mg/l calcium works out at roughly 225 mg/l as calcium carbonate. The Drinking Water Inspectorate cites World Health Organisation guidance that water at 200 mg/l or more “will produce scale”.

In these areas you are more likely to see:

  • A combi boiler that kettles or bangs, and hot water that runs cooler than it used to.
  • Immersion heaters failing because the element is coated in scale.
  • Shower heads and tap aerators clogging.
  • Thermostatic shower valves sticking.
  • White crust around taps and on glass.

Simple steps help. Descale shower heads regularly. Ask your engineer to check for scale at each boiler service. Consider a scale reducer on the cold feed to a combi boiler. A full water softener is an option, but Yorkshire Water says it must comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and you must keep an unsoftened supply for drinking, because softening adds sodium.

What it means for hot water cylinders

Cylinders show the difference clearly. In soft water areas, an immersion heater can last many years. In the harder east, elements scale up, overheat and fail sooner, and the safety valves on an unvented cylinder can stick if they are never serviced. If you have a cylinder in Handsworth or Rotherham, a yearly service is worth more than it is in Fulwood.

If you are thinking about a new cylinder or water heater, our hot water cylinders page explains the options, and our post on the unvented cylinder service explains what a service involves.

Ecclesall: an example

Ecclesall is a good example of how zones work. The S11 postcodes we checked near Ecclesall Road and Greystones were in the Ringinglow zone at 9.3 mg/l. One closer to Sharrow came up in the Sharrow zone at 15.4 mg/l. Both are soft, so for most Ecclesall homes scale is not the problem. Wear, sludge in heating systems and old joints are. Our Ecclesall area page covers the typical jobs there.

Checking your own water

Go to Yorkshire Water’s water hardness page and enter your postcode. You will see your supply zone, the hardness type, and a table of other things in your water, including lead, iron and sodium. If no report comes up, you may be between two zones, or outside Yorkshire Water’s area. Some homes just over the Derbyshire border, such as parts of Dronfield, may have a different water supplier, so check the name on your bill.

If you want a plumber’s view on whether your water is causing a fault, or whether a softener or scale reducer is worth it, tell us your postcode and what is happening.

Quick questions

Is Sheffield water hard or soft?

Mostly soft. West and south west Sheffield has some of the softest water on Yorkshire Water's network. East Sheffield and Rotherham are moderately hard to hard.

Do I need a water softener in Sheffield?

In most of the city, no. In Handsworth, Woodhouse and Rotherham, a softener or scale reducer can help appliances, but you must keep an unsoftened drinking tap.

Does Yorkshire Water soften the water?

No. Yorkshire Water says it does not soften water at any of its treatment works.

How do I check my own postcode?

Use the postcode checker on Yorkshire Water's water hardness page. It shows your supply zone, the hardness type and a full list of what is in your water.
